• South Montenegro: The Coast

The journey begins with morning romance: our road will follow the Adriatic coast, constantly revealing wonderful views of the Budva and Bar Riviera. We’ll make a short stop opposite Sveti Stefan island to capture the colorful sea landscapes in photos.

• South Montenegro: Bar City

Ahead lies the first stop of our tour – the port city of Bar, bathed in sun and lush with Mediterranean greenery. The most important landmark of the city is King Nikola’s Palace, built in 1885. The majestic building now houses a local history museum with interesting exhibits, and a magnificent botanical garden with rare plants and beautiful flowers stretches around the palace.

• South Montenegro: Old Bar Town

Moving a little away from the coast towards Mount Rumija, we’ll find ourselves in Old Bar! Old Bar is one of the few true fortress cities that have survived to this day, an open-air museum! The Old Town is surrounded by mighty fortress walls, and inside is a mysterious labyrinth of narrow, picturesque streets. The architecture of Old Bar is a unique mix of Venetian style with Ottoman notes. In ancient times, Old Bar was famous for its wealth and prosperity. Even now, the former splendor of ancient buildings can be glimpsed in the city’s ruins. Just look at the clock tower, the ruins of the princely palace, or the bishop’s house, and your imagination will fill in all the beauty of Old Bar before it was destroyed by earthquakes and a gunpowder explosion.

• South Montenegro: Old Town Ulcinj

Next, we head to Montenegro’s sunniest and southernmost city – Ulcinj! The city’s rulers changed hands many times. In ancient times, Ulcinj was founded by ancient Greek colonists, and Illyrian tribes also inhabited the city. With the arrival of Roman rule, the city gained the status of ‘special privileges.’ After the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city was part of Byzantium. Until the Middle Ages, Ulcinj was considered a true pirate nest on the Adriatic. For a long time, Ulcinj was also part of the Ottoman Empire, which is why a Muslim population still predominates here, and many old mosques can be found on the city’s streets. According to legend, during Ottoman rule, the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes was imprisoned here.

Perched on a hilltop is the old town, where among various ancient structures, the Kalaja citadel, built by the ancient Greeks, particularly stands out.

• South Montenegro: Bojana River

After soaking up cultural impressions, we’ll head to the Bojana River embankment to savor delicious fish dishes at one of the best fish restaurants on the bank – Konoba Fishka.

• South Montenegro: Velika Plaža

After a hearty lunch, it’s time for a little rest and a swim at the huge beach – Velika Plaža. This is the longest beach in Montenegro, stretching for a full 15 kilometers! It has a gentle entry into the sea, and the volcanic dark sand underfoot is fine, like flour. There aren’t many sandy beaches like this in Montenegro.

• South Montenegro: Skadar Lake

Our route then leaves the coast and heads inland – to Skadar Lake, one of Montenegro’s main attractions. This lake is recognized as the largest in the Balkans, home to about 50 fish species, and nearly three hundred bird varieties nest on its shores. Skadar Lake is framed by picturesque fishing villages, ancient monasteries, and medieval fortresses, many of which are well-preserved. This is a unique opportunity to see Skadar Lake from its southern side!

• South Montenegro: Virpazar Town

As part of the tour, we’ll visit one of the lakeside towns on Skadar Lake – Virpazar. In past years, this small town was a crossroads for caravan trade routes, playing an important role in the country’s economy. The town’s name itself comes from the Serbian word “Vir,” which translates to “whirlpool.” And the name Virpazar can be translated as “lively bazaar.” Today, Virpazar is the main tourist center located on Skadar Lake. Tourists come here to take boat trips on the lake and fish, as well as to see local attractions: ancient buildings, bridges, and fortresses.

• South Montenegro: Besac Fortress

We’ll visit Besac Fortress, built in the 15th century. You’ll be impressed not only by the ancient fortress walls of the citadel and the quiet, unique atmosphere of this medieval place, but also by the magnificent panoramic views of the surroundings. From the elevated position of the fortress, Skadar Lake and Virpazar are perfectly visible, and on a clear day, you can even see the shores of Albania.

Visiting the ancient fort will be a fitting end to a busy day. And after you’ve taken many photos of the local beauties to remember, you can head back, taking with you the most magical impressions from your journey through southern Montenegro.
