Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: Cetinje

The Monasteries of Montenegro tour begins with a pleasant morning walk through Cetinje, the country’s historic royal capital. Once, this charming town surrounded by greenery was known as the smallest capital in Europe.

Mini Montenegro

Despite its modest size, Cetinje is considered an important center of the Orthodox Church not only in Montenegro, but throughout the former Yugoslavia. After admiring the historic buildings of this charming old town, we will head to its main spiritual landmark — the Cetinje Monastery.

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: Cetinje Monastery

For Montenegrins, the monastery dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos has played a vital role for centuries. Founded in 1484, it has served as the residence of local metropolitans from its very beginning and continues to do so today.
That is why no Monasteries of Montenegro tour would be complete without visiting this sacred place.

Cetinje Monastery – Grand Royal Tour of Montenegro

A steady stream of pilgrims and visitors comes here to venerate one of Christianity’s most revered relics. The monastery houses the Right Hand of Saint John the Baptist. It also preserves a fragment of the Holy Cross, the relics of Saint Peter of Cetinje, and the remains of Montenegro’s last monarchs. In the monastery treasury, you will find a cross and a shroud embroidered by Catherine the Great.
During the visit, we will walk through the monastic quarters, observe how the monks live, and have the opportunity to speak with the abbot. Afterwards, you will have ample free time to venerate the relics and pray in peaceful silence.

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: Church of the Nativity of the Virgin on Ćipur

The Monasteries of Montenegro tour would not be complete without visiting the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. Originally built together with the Cetinje Monastery in the 15th century, the monastery served as the residence of the ruling bishop, while religious services were held in this church.
Later, both the monastery and the church were completely destroyed by the Ottomans. In 1886, Prince Nikola I of Montenegro rebuilt the church on the foundations of the old Cetinje Monastery. Today, it serves as the burial place of King Nikola and Queen Milena.
Although most group monastery tours do not include this site, it is truly a place that should not be missed.

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: The Philermos Icon of the Mother of God

This is one of the oldest sacred relics preserved in Montenegro’s monasteries. Every year, thousands of Orthodox pilgrims travel to Cetinje specifically to spend time in quiet prayer before this revered icon.
We believe it is our privilege to offer you the same opportunity.

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in Podgorica

From the ancient monastery in Montenegro’s historic capital, we will continue to the country’s modern capital — Podgorica. Here stands the contemporary Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ.
This monumental white-stone cathedral was built in 1993 and quickly gained recognition among Orthodox Christians around the world. Today, it is considered one of the most important and most beautiful landmarks of Montenegro’s capital.
During your tour of Montenegro’s monasteries and sacred sites, this remarkable cathedral is certainly worth a visit.

One of the unique features of this cathedral is that its interior walls were painted by master artists from Ukraine, Russia, Romania, and Serbia. In this way, the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ has become a symbolic representation of unity among Orthodox Christians from different countries.
Upon request, we can schedule your visit to coincide with a church service, allowing you to fully experience the spiritual atmosphere of this remarkable храм.

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: Dajbabe Monastery

Just a 10-minute drive from Podgorica lies the Dajbabe Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox male monastery that we will visit after our engaging walk through the capital. It was founded by Monk Simeon of Dajbabe, who referred to it as the “underground home of the Queen of Heaven,” as this place has been dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos since ancient times.
Visitors often speak of the monastery’s extraordinary spiritual energy — a presence you can truly feel with every fiber of your being.

As early as the 3rd century, the first Christians sought refuge from persecution in the catacombs beneath this site. Today, Dajbabe Monastery is a unique cave complex shaped like a cross.
Within its walls rest the relics of Saint Simeon the Wonderworker, adding to the deep spiritual significance of this remarkable place.

  • Monasteries of Montenegro: Ostrog Monastery

After visiting Dajbabe Monastery, we continue to the most revered spiritual shrine in Montenegro — Ostrog Monastery.
We plan our arrival at a time when most group tours have already left, allowing you to explore the monastery in peace and quiet. You will have ample time to walk around the sacred grounds, speak with the monks, and, if possible, meet the abbot.

Ostrog Monastery Tour – Monasteries of Montenegro

The monastery is located high in the mountains, at the foot of the Ostroška Greda cliff. Majestic and snow-white, it appears almost unreachable. Reaching the Upper Monastery via the stone steps can indeed be a challenge.
Yet those who choose to walk this sacred path — once taken by Saint Basil the Wonderworker himself — believe it brings spiritual purification and forgiveness.
If the ascent on foot feels too demanding, we can arrange transportation to bring you directly to the monastery entrance for your comfort.

Ostrog Monastery, Montenegro

Countless pilgrims come to Ostrog Monastery seeking healing and the intercession of Saint Basil. Women who dream of having children pray beside the vine that, according to tradition, grew at the very place where the Great Wonderworker reposed. Some even spend the night by the monastery walls to dedicate more time to prayer.
During our visit, we will spend approximately three hours in Ostrog. We will walk through the monastery cells and chambers, speak about the life of Saint Basil of Ostrog, and learn about his profound contribution to the spiritual history of Montenegro.
You will also have the opportunity to venerate the relics of Saint Basil the Wonderworker and leave written prayers with your personal wishes. It is believed that sincere prayers offered here are truly heard.
