  • Sarajevo: Baščaršija District

Our walk begins in the most authentic district, Baščaršija. It has existed since the city’s founding, making it Sarajevo’s main historical center. Although the district is quite small, it exudes a true Ottoman flavor. Local cafes serve excellent doner! Coffee shops beckon with the aroma of Turkish coffee. • Sarajevo: Spiritual Life

Next on our agenda, we’ll see Sarajevo’s main sanctuaries. We’ll start with the main and largest mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina – the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque. It was named in honor of the successor to the Sultan of the Bosnian Sanjak. The mosque was built in the likeness of Hagia Sophia (Istanbul), but at the last moment, the architect changed the building’s proportions, making the interior much brighter.

The Emperor’s Mosque (15th-16th centuries), also known as the Imperial Mosque, is considered the oldest in Sarajevo. Although its exterior is quite modest and simple, inside it is richly decorated with paintings, stone carvings, and mosaics. The backyard was designated for the burial of many sheikhs and prominent Muslim figures.

Behind a high stone fence hides the Old Orthodox Church (14th-15th centuries). It is believed that the fence was a mandatory condition for its existence during Ottoman times. Local authorities allowed the church to live its own life but insisted on building a fence so it wouldn’t attract attention. The church’s internal structure, as well as the iconostasis of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, are very interesting.

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of Sarajevo and the country’s main Catholic cathedral. The cathedral impresses not only with its majestic exterior but also with its interior decoration. The stained-glass windows, preserved to this day, are particularly striking in their beauty.
